ssignment Purpose and Objectives: A Research Proposal allows you to explore your topic, and ask questions that will help you narrow your focus to a manageable scope. At this point, you are not offering a fully reasoned argument. You are simply justifying your entry into a conversation on your topic by discussing what you have found in your initial thinking and research. You do not need to identify the definitive position you are taking yet or attempt to prove why a particular position is correct. This proposal is simply to clarify the issue you will write about rather than make an argument

Assignment Expectations and Requirements: In a well-organized essay, respond to the following: • Introduce the issue and present your initial formulation of the “question” you will be posing (e.g. Government-mandated rules regarding COVID: Are strict government-mandated COVID rules a necessary response to the pandemic or an infringement of individual rights?) • Explain why the topic is important or compelling to you. • Describe what you already know (or assume you know) about it. • Describe what you need to know more about it. • List the Discourse Communities which your topic may impact (political, governmental, and/or societal arenas, academic, scientific, or legal communities, particular age groups or ethnicities) and in which it may be discussed (academic journals, general knowledge news/editorial sources, particular social media sites). • Describe any worries you have about being able to effectively research and comment about this topic (e.g. is there too much scientific or academic jargon to understand? Is what you’ve found so far too generalized or stereotypical? Is your topic/question not compelling enough?). • Include at least one (1) potential source you have found and are considering using for your paper (attached at the end of the proposal).
