Persuasive Speech

Assignment Description

Purpose:

●To identify and select an appropriate topic and framework as a result of effective audience analysis.

●To prepare and deliver a persuasive argument utilizing an effective organizational speech pattern.

●To present a compelling call to action.

●To apply effective research skills for gathering and disseminating credible information that supports primary claims.

●To effectively reaffirm, establish, and/or motivate to activism and/or engage in some behavioral outcome.

Procedure:

●Conduct an audience analysis to pick a topic that your audience would find genuine interest in learning more about.

●Deliver a factual and well-organized speech about a specific topic within 5-7 minutes.

●Highlight content that is relevant to the audience and their existing perspectives/behaviors.

●Demonstrate credibility on the topic through preparation and professional delivery.

●Select and utilize an appropriate organizational speech pattern.

Assignment Requirements and Evaluating Factors:

●Submit speech topic following course instructions prior to the deadline (-5 pts from final speech grade if topic is not submitted by noted deadline).

●Bring outline workshop materials to discussion section on outline workshop days.

●You must cite at least 6 different sources of information and at least three of these sources must be from a scholarly source.

●Speakers may use note cards (no larger than 5’’ x 7’’ index cards) during the speech.

○NOTE: It is advised to use a small number of note cards to ensure you maintain an extemporaneous delivery style.

●Speakers are required to integrate some form of visual aid to supplement their speech.

●Bring feedback form class on your speech day. Remember: no form = -25 points).

●Speeches should be between 5-7 minutes.

○Speeches under 5 minutes automatically will be deducted 25 points.

○Speeches over 7 minutes automatically will be deducted 25 points.
