Global land Grabbing

In this course, we have examined causes of global poverty, theories of global economic development, and, in recent weeks, global land grabbing in places like Brazil. For your final essay, you’re going to write a well-informed and well-argued letter to the Albertus Magnus College Faculty Assembly in which you do the following:

Minimum 750 words

Inform them about the College’s indirect involvement with land grabbing (drawing on information provided by Mendonca)
Make connections between these practices and at least three other texts from our course, so that you’re able to situate this problem within everything you’ve learned about global issues and global justice. To do this, you need to provide brief summaries of three other texts and include and discuss the meaning and relevance of quotes from each text.
And finally, make a recommendation – based on your own perspective on these issues – about whether the Faculty Assembly should pass a resolution that would join other colleges, universities, and municipal and state pension funds in making an official statement on behalf of the institution to TIAA. Passing such a resolution and joining the petition would express collective opposition to investing in global farmland grabs and monocropping for agrofuels. In other words, should the Faculty Assembly pass a measure that result in signing a petition making these requests to TIAA? If you feel the Faculty Assembly should pursue a different approach (by not signing the petition, if you don’t agree with that, or, alternatively, by going further and disinvesting from TIAA entirely), then feel free to do so as long as you explain the reasons that support your recommendation.
Your letter to the faculty will be graded on the basis of three criteria:

Effective Written Communication: Spelling, grammar, sentence structure, organization, clarity, strong thesis, persuasiveness.
Reading for Deeper Understanding: Strong engagement in your writing with texts from the course, including and discussing the meaning and relevance of key quotes, choosing relevant quotes and using them to support your argument, demonstrating a close and complete reading of the texts.
Critical Thinking: Evaluating arguments, formulating well-informed and well-reasoned arguments of your own that are supported by reasons and evidence.
Please note: Plagiarism on this assignment will result in automatic WF and disciplinary action from the College.
