Paper topics for “Dreamland”

Please read book attached:Dreamland, then Please write about one of the following:

  1. What do you think is the significance of the title of the book? In what ways does the imagery of Dreamland recur throughout it? How are these images connected and what do they reveal about the role of drugs and addiction in human life?
  2. Compare and contrast Quinones’ account of the origins, impact, and treatments of drug-use and addiction, as well as the conduct of addicts, with the theories of Gabor Mate and Bruce Alexander, as well as the experiences of Henry Smith Williams and John Marks, as described in Chasing the Scream. How do the differences in views translate into different prescriptions of what policy should look like? Is there any middle ground that would unite the differences in views, and if so, what would it be?
  3. Describe how economic decline in rural and heartland America contributed to the underlying conditions that led to the opioid addiction and overdose crisis. Is this connection consistent with the theories of Gabor Mate and Bruce Alexander as described in Chasing the Scream?
  4. Explain the importance of Enrique, David Procter and Arthur Sackler in the development of the opioid crisis. Do their stories fit the archetype of Drug War characters proposed by Hari in Chasing the Scream, or are these new types of figures that Hari did not consider?
  5. Compare and contrast Quinones’ and Hari’s descriptions of modern society. How do each of these descriptions help us make sense of the origins and extent of the opioid epidemic?
  6. Describe the business model of the Xalisco heroin traffickers, why they adopted it, and how they refined it. What are its advantages and disadvantages? How does its operation, as well as the aftermath when cells are busted, compare to the accounts of drug dealing in Drugs and Drug Policy and Chasing the Scream? What economic factors do you think kept the Xalisco model from morphing into a more traditional drug-trafficking operation?
  7. Discuss the quest for the Holy Grail of drugs. What were some of its successes and failures? Comment on its prospects for ultimate success using evidence from the books we read. What does this quest reveal about humanity and how do some of these same foibles relate to Porter and Jick, the pain revolution, pharmaceutical marketing, pill mills, and the opioid crisis?
  8. Compare and contrast Quinones’ views of the origins of, and solutions to, the opioid crisis with those of Hari in Chasing the Scream. What do you think the differences arise from? Do you think they reflect broader patterns in society, or are they just idiosyncratic differences in the personalities and/or world views of the two authors? Explain.
