M2 Discussion 1: Biological Research Participants

In the following video the case is made for the use of animal subjects in biological research as a means for discovering information about how the brain works without having to test on human subjects.

Arguments can be made on both sides of this debate about the ethical implications of using animal and human subjects for research.



  1. For this discussion, please respond to the following; Which group’s rights-human participants, nonhuman animals, or psychotherapy clients – are the most important to protect in biological research studies?
  2. Why?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Rather, you are being asked to identify a stance on the topic and support that stance with at least 1 credible resource in addition to the Noba eText.


Research the case of Phineas Gage. Brain damage to his frontal lobe caused a significant personality change, the same kind of capricious and impulsive behavior that is often observed in teenagers whose frontal lobes have not yet fully formed.


  1. Think back to when you were a teenager. What was your thought process like at that time? Could you attribute some of your teenage behaviors to the consequence of your brain’s development lag? (Please only share responses appropriate for this academic space.)
  2. How has your thinking evolved with regard to your decision-making process? Give examples.
