1.3 Discussion: Aristotle and Developing a Topic

Learning Goal: I’m working on a english question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

  1. Check the rubric to see how you will be graded.
  2. Watch the Aristotle and Joshua Bell on Persuasion video.
  3. Carefully read Ethos, Pathos, Logos: The Three Pillars of Rhetoric Persuasion.
  4. Choose a general topic for your research paper:
    1. Your topic must be debatable so that you can take a clear position on one side or the other.
    2. Use ProCon.Org or Opposing Viewpoints in Context to find a topic that would be interesting for a large group of people.
    3. While you can take the opposite side of the same topic as a classmate, you may not take the same side on the same topic of any other classmate.
    4. If you want to use a topic that is not listed in ProCon.Org or Opposing Viewpoints, you must first get your instructor’s approval.
  5. By the end of the fifth day of the workshop, copy, paste, and respond to these four prompts, using the Discussion link (below):
    1. What did Joshua learn about ethospathos, and logos during his subway trip?
    2. What impact did changing places have on Joshua’s playing? (Use ethos, pathos, and logos to explain your answer.)
    3. State the specific, debatable, narrowed topic you plan to use for your research paper, and make it clear which side you are taking.
    4. How do you think you might use ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade your readers to believe your side of your topic?
  6. By the end of the workshop, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by doing at least two of the following:
    1. Copy and paste part of your classmate’s answer to question (a) or (b), and explain very specifically why you disagree.
    2. Copy and paste part of your classmate’s answer to question (a) or (b), and explain very specifically why you agree.
    3. Give a new, specific example of how your classmate might use ethos or pathos to support their side of their own topic.
  7. Remember that all discussion posts are expected to be clear, specific, supported, interesting, and on-topic.
